Q: What is the best non prescription arthritis medication for dogs?
My 10 year old Rottweiler, Belle has arthritis that is getting pretty bad. I don't want her on Rx medication because I've heard it can damage her liver, and other internal organs. What are some of the best non prescription medications I can give try for her? I already give her asprin, but it doesn't help her anymore.

A: She sounds pretty far advanced. I'm so sorry. This is a hard journey for you as it is for her. I had a Rottie who died of complications from arthritis and I have it pretty bad myself. Exercise is the BEST medicine. Swimming has no impact and is kind to arthritic joints. If Belle likes water, get her swimming. Taking off excess weight is essential to aiding in the comfort level. If Belle happens to have some excess weight on her, make motions to reduce the poundage. Substituting with canned pumpkin (not mix!) will help her to feel full while NOT adding unnecessary calories. There comes a time when drugs DO help a LOT. Adequan shots will help to promote fluid production in cushioning joints, which will reduce Belle's pain a LOT..... if her vet feels it's worth trying at her stage and age. I'm sorry for what you are facing. Best of luck to you both.

Q: Arthritis medication for horses that can work for dogs also?
I have a Germman Shepherd that is starting to show signs of arthritis (not hip dysplasia) and was wondering if anyone has used medication or supplements that are for horses but works well for dogs. I ask about this because I find that if it is for dogs the prices are artificially high but can find similar or the exact stuff that works

A: I do not know what is used for horses; however, glucosamine and chondroitin supplements work very well for dogs and cats both. This has been well documented in a book called "The Arthritis Cure for Pets" by Brian Beale published in 2000, which includes recommended dosages. There are various brands available now. You can get this at your vet's or specialty pet stores (the higher end ones carry more varieties), or you can order online through Drs. Foster and Smith (link below). A few years ago I noticed my 12-year-old cat's joints made clicking and cracking sounds when he walked, and saw that he was becoming cautious about jumping down from the furniture, using his paws to slide as far as he could before having to land with all his weight. I began feeding him Zuke's treats (link below) and it was not long before he began to act normally again. He is 16 now and sprints up and down the hall and leaps up and down high places like a young cat.

Q: Which arthritis external medication should I choose?
I am looking for an effective external arthritis medication (lotion, cream, gel, etc.). Which OTC medication should I choose and what should be the active ingredient? -thanks Rahul.

A: there is no study showing one is superior to another. Try several and then stick with the one that works best. If symptoms are still bothering you then, see a doctor

Q: Exssesive Weight gain with reumatoid arthritis medication?
I have to take several different medications for my condition, rheumatoid arthritis. I follow a diet, due to the fact that weight gain is associated with most of these medicines. I have gained 3 stone in weight even though i am on a diet, which i strichtly follow. This in turn aggrevates my condition, because i have to carry the extra weight. Does anyone have the same problem and how did you resolve this. Are there any specific diets or tips that could help me.

A: My grandmother struggled with this problem with her medications as well. If you can do a non weight bearing exercise or a low weight bearing exercise that would be helpful. But I understand that the condition in its self limits this. Swimming or water aerobics would be good.

Q: Has anyone given an older dog the arthritis medication Deramaxx with GOOD results, WITHOUT side effects?
I have heard so much about possible liver, kidney, or other damage, & my vet does admit there are risks, but still wants me to give this medication to my elderly dogs, a mixed breed & a lab. They DO have severe pain & impaired mobility due to arthritis, but I wonder if the medication will do more harm than good? So far, the mix seems better, the lab is about the same, but I still feel weird about giving the meds. What experiences have other dog owners had with it? Anything GOOD? Thanks.

A: Sorry to hear... I have not had any direct experience with Deramaxx, but did recently write an article about the negative side of the drug. After research and knowing what I do now, I wouldn't personally recommmend treating any older pets with meds... There is always a natural remedy available, tucked away sometimes, but out there somewhere. I will let you read more from the source links below, but pet owners should be aware that most pharmacy drugs for animals were probably created after testing for human usage... Who tested these for our pets?

Q: What are alternative treatments for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis besides medication?
I have a moderate case of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and have been on pretty strong medications for it since I was 2 years old. I currently have a 3 1/2 month old and am breast feeding so I can not take any medication. I am in a lot of pain but do not want to sacrifice the breast feeding so I am looking for another option. Example: a special diet or anything???

A: Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (Still's Disease) Chronic, inflammatory, systemic disease which may cause joint or connective tissue damage & visceral lesions throughout the body characterized by fever, rash, hepato-spleenomegaly & arthritis in children. It is a persistent inflammatory arthritis (> 6 weeks) that begins before age 16 for which no specific cause can be found. Homeopathic Treatment for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis Homeopathy treats the person as a whole. It means that homeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The homeopathic medicines are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions. Please visit the following web-site and choose the medicines that are relevant to your symptoms. Homeopathic remedies are perfectly safe even while you are breast-feeding. http://www.hpathy.com/diseases/juvenile-rheumatoid-arthritis-symptoms-treatment-cure.asp

Q: Is it arthritis? What medication actually relieves the pain?
A month ago, my fathers knees and hands started to get swollen and been hurting. Hes gone to the doctor for check ups many times and they told him that he doesn't have anything. There are times when it is hard for him to sit and get up from chairs because of the pain of his knees. And there are other times when he cant open a plastic water bottle because of the pain in his fingers.(he sometimes cant even move them). Is it arthritis? What medication actually relieves the pain?

A: It sounds like arthritis, or bursitis. I am not an expert on the subject just the pain from the arthritis. The doctor can run a test to see if it's arthritis or do a bone density test. Tylenol is about the best to take. I would not recommend tylenol arthritis If you do try watch for side effects. Sometimes expecially if the weather is changing or cold it will be worse. If the knee is warm you can tell there is a lot of inflamation. I kow the dr. can prescribe prescription meds (for a fact) sometimes i take piroxicam for mine to take the inflamation out. And not all the time will all the pain go away. But there is some relief.

Q: How can I ease my dogs arthritis without Rx medication?
I have a 9 year old Rottweiler (named Belle) who is having some trouble with arthritis. She is becoming more stiff as the nights get colder, I'm doing what I can for her. I let her sleep on my bed, and on the couch when she's in the living room. I am also giving her Bayer Asprin (I asked my vet about the appropriate dose), but she is still limping a bit through out the day. Is there anything else I can do the ease her arhritis pain without having to put her on a perscription medication?

A: I have a 9 yr old pug/boxer cross that also has arthritis problems. We give him glucosamine with chondroitin and aspirin once a day and it helps immensely. After the first couple doses he was right back to playing and was much happier. He has always had wet food mixed with his dry food so it was easy to hide it. We just got the glucosamine gel-caps that we could pull apart and mixed the powder from one pill as well as half an aspirin dissolved in water with his wet food.

Q: Whats the best pet arthritis medication?
What were the results?

A: This is the best I've found. I have bought it for many of my friend's dogs, and it always helps> http://springtimeinc.com/product/94/2

Q: Rheumatoid arthritis medication question?
My friend have rheumatoid arthritis, she is concerned because she's taking 3 medication, and still have joint damage on her small joints. Is this normal?

A: This is typical. There is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. It is an autoimmune disease, which means that her body is literally attacking itself because it is mistaking it's own cells for invader cells. Like I said earlier, there is no cure because no one is especially sure of what causes it. All treatments for rheumatoid arthritis either make the symptoms more manageable or slow the deterioration of the joints. I hope that you have found this helpful. I wish your friend the best of luck.

Q: What if a 78 year old male takes his anti-depressants and his arthritis medication with beer and whiskey?

A: It may not kill him, but it's not a good idea. The antidepressants are a CNS depressant already. The alcohol further depresses the CNS, which could cause death, even if accidental. Also, the arthritis medicine often causes stomach irritation. The alcohol could further irritate his stomach lining, causing a bleeding ulcer.

Q: Has anyone used the "New" Arthritis medication for dogs...?
It's Dr Franks arthritis and joint pain ease? You spray it in the Water????I ordered some for my dogs and am hoping for a good outcome

A: I would not use it. Doesn't sound like it would do much good. I will look into it. **Sorry, all I had to see was the "As Seen On TV" logo, and I KNOW it will do nothing!!!!! Glucosamine/Chondroitin will work much better for your dogs. **All you have to do is search "Dr Frank's" It was not hard at all. http://www.drfrankspainrelief.com/home.php

Q: What is a suitable medication for arthritis if you have a very acid stomach?
I've tried Dicorsodyl (diarhea) Co-Dydramol (constipation), and Meloxican (diarhea again) all accompanied with abdominal cramps. Is amputation the only answer.

A: No, amputation is not the answer! Have you thought of trying complimentary therapy? Glucosamine Sulphate is a popular complimentary treatment for mild to moderate osteo-arthritis. Glucosamine is a form of amino sugar believed to play an anti-inflammatory role in cartilage formation and repair. It's derived from shellfish (so avoid if you have any allergies to shellfish) but there are vegetarian forms available. Usual dose is 1500mg once a day. Glucosamine is easily available from any of the high street health food shops, but you may find it cheaper to buy online. If you are prone to excess stomach acid, you could ask your GP about prescribing you a medication to help to protect the lining of your stomach/digestive tract, such as Lanzoprazole or Omeprazole or Ranitidine. Eating about 30 minutes to an hour before taking any medications can also help (unless your medication needs to be taken on an empty stomach). Has your GP referred you to a rheumatology consultant at your local hospital? You could (diplomatically) ask about this. There are also specialist pain clinics that you could be referred to which deal with all aspects of uncontrolled pain. Always check with your GP before starting any new treatment, particularly if you are on any blood thinning medications such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel. Don't give up hope, there are lots of options that your GP can investigate with you. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

Q: Any good over the counter medication for arthritis pain?
I have very bad arthritis pain and my doctor just told me to take advil. It's not doing much for my pain. Anything else better out there? Thanks.

A: Have you tried Aleve? I find that I have to rotate OTC medications - take Motrin for a few weeks, switch to Aleve, switch to Advil. They seem to not be as effective with continuous use. I use the extra strength formulas. Also if your pain is constant you need to be taking something on a regular schedule. As my doctor said - you get better relief if you stay ahead of the pain rather than chasing it.
